Beef And Broccoli

This past week, I was looking for something fun and easy to cook and I stumbled on this recipe for beef and broccoli. The recipe I used is from the Pioneer Woman and combines flank steak with fresh broccoli and an asian style sauce to make for a nice healthy dinner. I have made this dish many times and find that it still tastes just as good as the first time I made it each time. Here are the ingredients I used for this wonderful dish as well as the steps I took to cook it.

Ingredients I Used:

For The Sauce:

  • A little less than 1/2 of a cup of soy sauce- the recipe calls for a 1/2 cup of soy sauce but I find that if you add too much soy sauce then the dish gets too salty.
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • roughly 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger- I grated mine into the sauce so it was not exactly 1 tablespoon. But, you should be careful with how much ginger you add as if you add too much ginger then it will overpower the dish.
  • 2 cloves minced garlic

For The Rest Of The Dish:

  • 1 pound flank steak that has been sliced into thin pieces against the grain- I have also used beef stew meat in place of flank steak before and it has worked pretty well.
  • roughly 1 pound of broccoli that has been cut into florets- I usually buy 2 broccoli crowns and then cut them into florets myself. But, grocery stores also sell pre cut broccoli if you do not feel like cutting the broccoli by hand.
  • 4 tablespoons of olive oil- I used a little more than 4 tablespoons when making this dish as my pan got a little bit dry over time. But, feel free to use more or less olive oil depending on what you need.
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup oyster sauce
  • roughly 2 cups cooked rice- used to serve with the dish.

Steps I took To Make The Beef And Broccoli:

  • In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, cornstarch, brown sugar, ginger and garlic. Stir to combine and let sit for a few minutes.

  • While you wait for the sauce to sit, proceed to put the cut beef onto a plate. Once the meat is on a plate, pour half of the sauce on top of it and let marinade for about 10 minutes. Save the other half of the sauce in the bowl that it is in as you will use it later while you are cooking the beef and broccoli.

  • After the meat has been marinading for about 5 minutes, proceed to heat up a wok or deep bottomed pan over medium high heat. Once the pan is hot, add the 4 tablespoons of olive oil and let heat. Proceed to add the cut broccoli to the pan and let cook for roughly 1 to 2 minutes or until it is soft. After the broccoli has cooked, take it out of the pan and put it into a bowl.

  • Let the pan heat back up for a few minutes and if it looks a little bit dry, add some more olive oil. Once the pan is hot again, add the marinaded beef in a single layer and let cook for a couple minutes. After a couple minutes is up, flip the meat and stir it around a bit. Continue to let the meat cook until it is all brown and there is no red left. Stir the pan as needed.

  • Once the meat is cooked, add the broccoli back into the pan and stir to combine with the beef. After stirring the pan, add the other 1/2 of the sauce from the bowl and let it cook for roughly 30 seconds, stirring as needed.

  • After 30 seconds, add the beef broth and oyster sauce to the pan. Stir again to combine and let cook for about 2 minutes or until you think the beef and broccoli has enough sauce.
  • Take the pan off the heat and serve the beef and broccoli over rice. If you like spice, pour some Sriracha sauce over the top of the dish. Eat hot and enjoy!

Overall And My Thoughts On This Dish:

To sum things up, I really enjoy making asian food and think that this dish is perfect if you are looking for a quick and easy dinner. While a lot of asian food, such as dumplings, is hard to make and takes all day, this beef and broccoli dish requires minimal prep and is ready on your dinner table in 30 minutes or less. I have made this dish many times now and each time I cook it, I figure out a new trick that makes it even better than before. I highly recommend making this dish if you like asian food but also do not want to cook all day. I would like to say thank you to the Pioneer Woman for sharing the recipe for this dish with us. I hope you enjoyed this post and can make beef and broccoli in the near future!
