Shrimp Chow Mein!

Chow Mein Ingredients Cooking

A couple days ago, I made a wonderful shrimp chow mein using a recipe that my brother got from a cooking class he did earlier this year. My brother has just begin taking an interest in cooking and this dish was super fun for him to make. So, if you know anyone who wants to learn how to cook then this could be a good dish for them. This dish is super simple to make and can be a great weeknight dinner option. Furthermore, it only requires seven ingredients and minimal prep work which is nice. Here are the ingredients I used and the steps I took to make this delicious chow mein.

Shrimp Chow Mein Ingredients:

  • This dish serves 3-4 people depending on how hungry everyone is
  • 5 peeled and diced carrots
  • 1/2 a head of cabbage chopped
  • 1 pound peeled and deveined shrimp
  • 2 packages of chow mein noodles
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce– use more as needed
  • 1/2 cup oyster sauce– use more as needed
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons canola or olive oil
  • Sriracha sauce— if you like spice. I used it to add some spice to my chow mein

Steps I took To Make The Chow Mein:

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 15- 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 25- 30 minutes
  • Boil a large pot of salted water over high heat. Once its boiling add your noodles and cook for about two minutes or until they are soft. The noodles will cook more in the pan with the other ingredients so do not worry about them being slightly undercooked. Drain the noodles and then proceed to toss them in cold water and a splash of oil. The oil will make it so that they do not stick together and the water helps to stop the cooking process. Set aside.
  • Once the noodles have cooked, proceed to heat up a medium sized deep bottom pan over medium heat. After the pan is hot, add the oil. Let the oil heat up for a few seconds and then add the cabbage to the pan. Let the cabbage cook for a few minutes, until it is browned a bit and wilted.
Cabbage Cooking
  • After the cabbage is wilted, add your carrots to the pan. Cook the carrots with the cabbage for roughly four minutes or until they are soft to the touch.

  • Once both of your veggies are cooking, it is time to add your shrimp to the pan. Put your shrimp into the pan and the proceed to add a pinch of salt and pepper for seasoning. Do not add too much salt here as the soy sauce and oyster sauce mixture has a lot of salt in it. Proceed to stir your pan and cook you shrimp for about three minutes until they are pink throughout and fully cooked.
All Ingredients Cooking In pan
  • Now that your shrimp are cooked, its time to make your sauce. Proceed to combine the oyster sauce and soy sauce in a bowl and stir to combine. Once you have made your sauce, add your cooked noodles to the pan and stir around. Let all the ingredients cook together for about one minute.
Sauce Ready to Use
  • After your ingredients have been cooking together, add your sauce and really begin to toss the ingredients around so that the sauce can get all around. If your ingredients are looking a little dry, make a little more sauce and add it to the pan. Once you have enough sauce, toss your noodles for about two minutes and then turn off the heat.
  • Now it is time to serve the chow mein! Proceed to take some of the noodles, shrimp, cabbage and carrots out of the pan and put them into a bowl. Serve with Sriracha sauce if desired and enjoy!

Final Thoughts:

All I can say about this shrimp chow mein is that it was awesome. The simplicity of this dish was what made it special as even someone with very little background in the kitchen could make it. Furthermore even though it is a simple dish, it has a ton of flavor and packs a punch. This dish is similar to any restaurant version of chow mein and can be made in 25 minutes which is amazing. I want to say thank you to my brother and his cooking class instructor for sharing this dish with me and for allowing me to cook it. If you crave an Asian noodle dish then this is for you and you need to make it immediately. Thank you for reading this blog post and I hope that shrimp chow mein is in your future!
